First Circular

The 21st International Congress of the Société Rencesvals will take place from August 13-17 2018 at the University of Toronto, Canada. Most congress sessions and events will be held on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus.

The following themes have been selected:

  1. The chanson de geste between France and England (Plenary Speaker: Luke Sunderland, Durham University)
  2. Travels and exchanges: diversity, cultural contact, and the Romance epic in the Americas (Plenary Speaker: Simone Pinet, Cornell University)
  3. Family structures, filiation, and bastardy (Plenary Speaker: Muriel Ott, Université de Strasbourg)
  4. Production centers of the chanson de geste (Plenary Speaker: Gabriele Giannini, Université de Montréal)
  5. Varia

The congress’s chief languages will be French, Spanish, and Italian. We will also consider paper proposals in English. Papers will be 20-25 minutes in length (30 minutes with discussion time included).

So that we may have some idea of the number of participants, we would ask all those who are interested in participating in the congress to pre-register on our website before October 1, 2017, indicating whether or not they intend to present a paper and, as far as possible, what the provisional title of the paper or the conference theme to be addressed will be. Modifications at a later date will, of course, be possible.

Those who want to present a paper should submit a proposal to the conference organizers before December 1, 2017 to the following email address: rencesvals2018@chass.utoronto.ca.. This proposal should include the presenter’s name, institutional affiliation, paper title, and an abstract of 200-300 words.

Registration fees will total around 175-180 Canadian dollars for regular participants, with special rates for students, those currently without employment, and those who accompany the participants. The second circular, which will be sent out near the end of October 2017, will contain more precise information about fees.

The congress outing will be to the Niagara Peninsula (including a visit to a vineyard) and to Niagara Falls. Additional fees for this trip will depend on the number of participants and will have to be calculated later. We will also organize guided tours to points of interest within Toronto (Fort York, the Distillery District, the medieval collections at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Aga Khan Museum).

The Organizing Committee hopes to see you in Toronto!
