21st International Congress of the Société Rencesvals
Toronto, 13 – 17 August 2018
13 March 2018
Second Circular
As previously announced, the 21st International Congress of the Société Rencesvals will take place from August 13-17 2018 at the University of Toronto, Canada. The congress sessions and events will be held on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus, at Victoria College and St Michael’s College, on the east side of Queen’s Park. A few events will take place in other buildings on the same campus.
We would like to remind you that the themes selected are as follows:
- The chanson de geste between France and England (Plenary Speaker: Luke Sunderland, Durham University)
- Travels and exchanges: diversity, cultural contact, and the Romance epic in the Americas (Plenary Speaker: Simone Pinet, Cornell University)
- Family structures, filiation, and bastardy (Plenary Speaker: Muriel Ott, Université de Strasbourg)
- Production centers of the chanson de geste (Plenary Speaker: Gabriele Giannini, Université de Montréal)
- Varia
The congress’s chief languages will be French, Spanish, and Italian. We will also consider paper proposals in English. Papers will be 20-25 minutes in length (30 minutes with discussion time included). Thanks to all those who have already submitted a proposal. We will accept proposals until 14 April.
Any person who wishes to present a paper must be a member in good standing of the Société Rencesvals. Other individuals, who have a justified interest in the topic, may also register for the congress.
The congress excursion will be to the Niagara Peninsula (Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, wine tasting). We will also organize guided tours to points of interest within Toronto (details TBA). We hope to arrange for a reception on Sunday evening (12 August).
A list of hotels with which we have concluded agreements as well as of other relatively low-priced accommodations is accessible on the congress website (https://rencesvals2018.utoronto.ca). Please refer to this for details of the conditions of each establishment.
In order to conform to the transparency requirements of the University, we had to sign a contract with HartHouse Tickets Services for the collection of the registration fees. The registration page should be open towards 10 April. You will have to pay a small additional amount (of 3 $ CDN per person) on top of the fees collected.
